 What is Atovaquone Medicine ?

Atovaquone (also called mapleone) is used to prevent or treat certain infections, such as Septra or Bactrima (Pneumonia). Atovaquone is a bright yellow, citrus-flavored liquid medicine taken orally.

Side Effect

First (after taking medicine)

• Nausea and vomiting
• Stomach upset

The day after taking the medicine (even one day after the start of treatment)

• Diarrhea
• The rash
• Dizziness
• Having trouble sleeping
• Sweating
• Headache
• Low blood count
• Changes in liver function
• Fever

These are the most common side effects, but there may be others as well. Tell your doctor or nurse about all side effects.

Special instructions

• To get the best protection against the disease, you need to take atovaquone exactly as your doctor told you. Taking a small amount or the absence of a dose reduces protection.
• Always take this medicine with food.
• Before each dose, shake the bottle of atovaquone to mix the drug thoroughly.
• Store medicines at room temperature. Do not refrigerate.
• This drug may affect the way other drugs work. Always tell your doctor if you are currently taking any medications and if you are starting to take any new medications while taking atovaquone.
